Updates

Summer 2020 Updates:

NAMM Member Contact Scott Abrahamson joined with numerous Rhode Island music educators in a four day professional development session in July entitled "Curriculum Design & Modifications for Middle School & High School Performing Ensembles in the Age of COVID-19. Led by Dr. David Neves of the University of Rhode Island, the session was made possible by The Music School of the Rhode Island Philharmonic. Participants examined methods of effectively and safely providing standards based music education through performing ensembles within the COVID-19 guidelines. The preliminary report of the Colorado Study was examined as part of the process.

The session followed on the heels of robust music advocacy in the state. In May, the leadership of the Rhode Island Music Education Association sent a letter to all of the superintendents of schools in the state to advocate for music and arts education amid expected budget cuts resulting from the economic fall-out from COVID-19. In June, the Rhode Island Arts Learning Network delivered a statement entitled "Arts Education is Essential" to the Rhode Island Department of Education.
