Hans Kuhner

Hans Kuhner has followed long traditions in print music by engraving musical notes on lead plates to reproduce songs – hearkening to the days and the style in which Germany’s music publishing industry was formed some 500 years ago. In this clip from his NAMM Oral History interview, Hans demonstrates the craft of hand engraving, thus showing the mastery required in the production of sheet music plates. Although computers have modernized this task, the art of handcrafted plate engraving is kept alive for use in special collections, such as those produced by the G. Henle Music Publishing Company.
