The Marketplace Fairness Coalition, of which NAMM is a member, held a press conference on Tuesday, April 23 with Senators and small businesses on Capitol Hill to urge passage of the Marketplace Fairness Act (S.743), sponsored by U.S. Sens. Mike Enzi (R-WY), Dick Durbin (D-IL), Lamar Alexander (R-TN) and Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND). NAMM Member Pete Sides of Robert M. Sides Family Music Center, Williamsport, PA participated in the press conference.
Legistlation passed the Senate with a vote of 69-27 on May 6, 2013. Bill updates available
The Marketplace Fairness Act would close the online sales tax loophole that harms small businesses, bring sales tax laws up-to-date and level the playing field so all businesses can compete fairly. Next, the bill will be deliberated in the US House of Representatives and is currently (June 2103) in review with the House Judiciary Committee. NAMM urges its members to contact their federal elected officials and urge their support and action to create legislation that provides sales tax parity for both brick and mortar and online commerce.
