Harman Sponsors Window Serenades on Make Music Day

Make Music Day (MMD) is a free celebration of music around the world on June 21st. Launched in 1982 in France as the Fête de la Musique, it is now held on the same day in more than 1,000 cities in 120 countries.

HARMAN has been a supporter of MMD since 2016 and as the official sound of MMD’s Street Studios. Located in cities across the globe, the activation brought world-class DJs and producers onto the streets for MMD, setting up mobile recording studios where onlookers were invited to join improvised music sessions. At the end of MMD, each producer would mix down one track, using only the material captured onsite, to share the sounds of their city with the world. In 2019, the last year of the activation, Street Studios locations included Budapest, Islamabad, Lagos, Moscow, and Querétaro.

HARMAN Inspired, HARMAN’S global initiative, sponsored a series of window serenades events, a MMD program that “shares the joy of live music with isolated elderly people, bringing musicians to play outside nursing home windows for those that request a song.”

Window serenades debuted in 2020, as part of a series of socially distanced MMD activations. The success of last year's event has led to window serenades becoming part of the annual MMD tradition.

The program will occur throughout the United States and included music from chapters of the American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada, individual musicians, bands, and collective groups, and non-profit organizations. However, HARMAN engaged in window serenades at an unprecedented scale.

The NAMM Member company facilitated activations at nursing homes across four cities: Allen (TX), Calabasas (CA), Livonia (MI), and Stamford (CT). HARMAN sponsored performances from musical acts and its had its employees participate in the serenades.
