Holding its second annual Make Music Day, Argentina is a proud participant in the global movement. As only one of two participating countries in South America, Make Music Argentina is looking to springboard off of their 2018 success to bring an even more dynamic and larger celebration to the streets throughout the country this Make Music Day. We spoke with Lorena Medina, Director of Magma Musica S.A. about Make Music Argentina.

What motivated you to get involved with Make Music Day?

MMD is an amazing project and a challenge for Argentina. Helping people to make music is really rewarding and despite the great effort it involves, we are glad to take part in this experience. The community is truly grateful and that's the reason why we decided to start the project and grow it. MMD is a day of celebration and joy. We work hard but we enjoy “harder”!

When was Make Music Day Argentina started and how has it grown since then?

MMD Argentina started last year after receiving an invitation from the Make Music Day Alliance at The 2018 NAMM Show. It was a great challenge for us and despite the short lead time we had, we were determined to participate. In June 2018, we celebrated MMD in 125 cities within Argentina with approximately 150 activities such as jams, workshops, concerts, and classes. We are new to this but growing. Last year it was difficult to make people understand the concept of MMD. In Argentina, people are unfamiliar with this event, so it is our mission to promote it and get people involved. This year, we are better organized, and we hope to exceed our expectations. We believe that this is a long process, but we are on the right path.

What is new for 2019 Make Music Argentina?

This year, we have the support of the national television and radio channels, Televisión Argentina, and Radio Nacional. We are extremely excited about this three-year partnership agreement and what the prospects hold for the future of Make Music Argentina. With this help, we can broadcast the shows live and many cities of the country will be able to take part in MMD.

Apart from this, we have organized the campaign #donamusica, the idea of this campaign is to give away old or damaged instruments, accessories, and instruments people do not use and give them to different culture centers and vulnerable neighborhoods located in our country. This will help people with little resources make music and enjoy the benefits of making music.

What should the world know about the music scene in Argentina that they may be unfamiliar with?

In Argentina, approximately 30% of the population, especially, young people and teenagers play a musical instrument. Despite this, we all are involved with music in different ways such as listening to music and going to concerts as music is very important to our culture. We have a wide range of musical styles and music is synonymous with good times and friends.
