Sydney’s Oldest Independent Music Shop Recognized as A Small Business Champion
Logans Pianos was presented with The Australian Small Business Champion Award for specialty retail earlier this month. The store, which is Sydney’s oldest independent music shop, was also named a NAMM Top 100 store at Believe in Music week in January 2021.
Founded in 1920 as C LOGANS & SONS, Logans Pianos was the brainchild of Charles Logan Sr., a Scottish immigrant who relocated to Sydney 12 years earlier. The store sold popular instruments of the day, pianos and pianolas, and even sold gramophones. By 1925 C LOGANS & SONS had expanded to include five branches across Sydney, which operated for five years before they consolidated into the Burwood, Sydney location. By 1946, Charles Sr. retired, leaving the business to his son and daughter-in-law, Charles Logan II and Joan Logan. The family continued to run a thriving business, and in 1978, Charles II and Joan’s son, Geoff, took on a full-time role in the store. By 1995, Logans Pianos expanded their merchandise selection to include a wide range of instruments and sheet music. In 2002, the fourth generation of Logans joined the business when Geoff’s son, Chris, joined the team. Today, both the third and fourth generation of the family is still actively running the business, and Logans Pianos remains a staple in the community.
The Australian Small Business Champion Award was established in 1999 and recognizes the achievements of small businesses and offers “a unique opportunity to highlight Australia’s most outstanding small businesses. The awards seek to recognize the hard work that business owners contribute to the local community in generating employment for millions of Australians, as well as their contribution to the Australian economy.” The award marks a significant milestone for Logans Pianos during their 101 years of operation. “Part of being in the music industry – either as a creative or as a retailer – is having to constantly reinvent yourself,” says Geoff Logan. Chris, who accepted the award on behalf of Logans Pianos said, “I want to thank all our staff, customers, and my parents for this monumental achievement. You are what makes Logans what it is – one of the best music shops in the world.”
