The She Rocks Awards Recognize Trailblazers at The NAMM Show
The She Rocks Awards will return to The NAMM Show on Thursday, April 13, 2023. The Women’s International Music Network (WiMN) presents the awards and recognizes women who stand out as innovators and role models in the music industry. Recently, She Rocks revealed the first three honorees will include Judy Collins, Shelly Peiken, and Noelle Scaggs, among others.
Founded in 2012, the She Rocks Awards “Honors trailblazing women from all areas of the industry – from educators to label execs, manufacturers, non-profits, media, performers, engineers, and more.” Past honorees include Pat Benatar, Sheila E., Melissa Etheridge, Lita Ford, Gloria Gaynor, Chaka Khan, Linda Perry, Nita Strauss, The Bangles, and more. The yearly event attracts music icons, artists, industry, professionals, fans, and media for a “One-of-a-kind event that shines the spotlight on women who stand out in the industry and offers a high-energy evening of performances, networking opportunities, giveaways, silent auction, and more.”
Judy Collins is a singer, songwriter, musician, and an Academy Award-nominated documentary director. Perhaps best known for the range of material she has scored, ranging in everything from folk to country, show tunes, pop, rock and roll, and standards, Collins is a seven-time GRAMMY® nominee, one of which resulted in a win for Best Folk Recording for her song, “Both Sides, Now.” Collins’ catalog includes 36 studio albums, nine live, multiple compilations, four holiday albums, and 21 singles. Beyond her success as a singer, songwriter, and musician, Collins earned a nod from the Academy Awards for her directorial debut in Antonia: A Portrait of the Woman and has remained passionate about social activism. The cultural treasure’s 55th album, Spellbound, has been nominated in the Best Folk Album category at the 65th Recording Academy GRAMMY Awards in 2023.
Shelly Peiken is a songwriter perhaps best known for co-writing the hits “What a Girl Wants” and “Come On Over Baby” by Christina Aguilera and Meredith Brook’s smash hit, “Bitch.” She has also penned tracks for other notable artists, including Aaliyah, Backstreet Boys, Brandy, Cher, Joe Cocker, Natalie Cole, Celine Dion, Gloria Gaynor, Gladys Knight, Lisa Loeb, Reba McEntire, NSYNC, The Pretenders, Britney Spears, and many others. In 2020, Peiken released singles from her debut album, 2.0, etc…, an album she described as “a celebration of songwriting.” Peiken is a fierce advocate of creators’ rights with SONA (Songwriters of North America), of which she is a founding member.
Elektra recording artist Noelle Scaggs is the co-front person of the multiplatinum act Fitz and the Tantrums, but the talented songstress is also an accomplished songwriter whose credits include co-writing her band’s chart-topping, platinum-certified singles “Out of My League” and “The Walker.” Beyond music creation, Scaggs, is immensely passionate about two things: good food and world travel. In 2018, she launched her production house, Adventures with Scaggs, LLC. Scaggs is currently working on her newly founded initiative, Diversify The Stage, which was created to foster more accessible pipelines to careers in concerts, events, and touring for BIPOC, LGBTQ+, Female-Identifying, and Gender Nonconforming communities.
Founder of the WiMN and co-producer of the She Rocks Awards, Laura B. Whitmore, spoke about this year’s honorees, saying, “An important aspect of the She Rocks Awards is to shine a spotlight on women from all walks of the industry - on the stage and behind the scenes. There are so many interesting and motivating stories behind women’s careers in our industry. It is always so moving and energizing to hear what female business leaders share. I want everyone to leave energized and determined to make change happen.”
