NAMM Museum Performance: Laurence Juber
GRAMMY® winning guitarist Laurence Juber is a solo performer, recording artist, composer and arranger. His playing fuses folk, jazz, blues, pop and classical styles, creating a multi-faceted performance that belies the use of only one instrument.
A music graduate of London’s Goldsmith’s College, he was featured guitar soloist with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra before becoming established as a studio musician in the mid-1970’s. First internationally recognized as lead guitarist in Beatle Paul McCartney’s Wings, with whom he won a Grammy, Juber has since established himself as world-renowned guitar virtuoso and entertainer. Juber, known to his fans as LJ, has released 26 solo albums which spotlight his unique touch and tone on acoustic guitar. His latest release, Touchstones, is a classically-themed journey through the evolution of fingerstyle guitar.
His LJ Plays The Beatles was voted one of Acoustic Guitar Magazine’s all-time Top Ten albums. His solo arrangement of The Pink Panther Theme earned him a second Grammy, while his arrangement of Stand By Me was heard nationally in a Diamonds Are Forever commercial. Juber’s DVD-Audio project Guitar Noir (AIX Records) won a CES Demmy award for best audio. His ‘photo memoir’ Guitar With Wings was recently published by Dalton Watson Fine Books.
As a studio musician, he can be heard on recordings from artists as diverse as Dan Hicks & The Hot Licks, Seal and the French chanteuse Sylvie Vartin, plus he is featured on the soundtracks to hundreds of TV shows such as Home Improvement and movies including the academy award-winning Dirty Dancing, Good Will Hunting and Pocahontas. Juber co-composed the soundtrack of the award-winning video game Diablo III and scored the NBC Dateline documentary Children Of The Harvest. His music is also featured in the Ken Burns’ documentary The Tenth Inning.

Chauvet Professional: Careers in Lighting With Victor Zeiser and Nook Schoenfeld
Victor Zeiser, founder of Parnelli Hometown Hero Nominee Squeek Lights joins Kid Rock lighting designer Nook Schoenfeld for a panel discussion that will shed light on
their insights and personal experiences, key moments and decisions on their path to become LDs. Parting from different starting points, Victor and Nook share more than one way to work in lighting design.
Victor Zeiser is a lighting designer and the founder of Squeek Lights, a company which specializes in providing lighting design and rentals for club-level tours. He has a B.F.A. in lighting design from Webster University and has toured with bands, including They Might Be Giants, Beartooth and Animal Collective.
Nook Schoenfeld took his first step toward becoming a lighting designer when he responded to a “Stagehands Wanted” bulletin board ad while an English major in college. This soon led to a job as a sound/lighting tech. Moving exclusively into lighting, he was there for the for the advent of moving heads and picked up experience in the 1980s and ’90s working for a diverse range of clients, including Talking Heads, The Clash, Sugar Ray, No Doubt and Lenny Kravitz. At an MTV Awards show, his work came to the attention of Kid Rock, ultimately leading to what would become one of the longest-running and well-known artist-lighting designer relationships in the industry. He has also designed for an array of other artists, including John Legend and Sheryl Crow. In December 2014, the former English major added another line to his impressive resume when he was named editor of PLSN.

In this presentation, Michael Raine, editor of Canadian Musician magazine, will break down how different types of playlists are curated, the key differences between the streaming services, the role of analytics and, most importantly, tangible actions emerging artists can take to get their songs on playlists and have them be successful once there.

NAMM Museum Performance: Ed Gerhard
From Tokyo to Rome and venues across the US, Ed Gerhard’s music has touched audiences all over the world. Performing on 6-string, 12-string, slide guitar or Acoustic Hawaiian Lap Slide, Gerhard captivates his audiences with virtuosity, generosity and sly humor. Known for his gorgeous tone and compositional depth, Gerhard can move a listener with a single note. Scott Alalrik of the Boston Globe said it best when he wrote ‘Gerhard does not write instrumentals. He writes songs only a guitar can sing.
Based truly on the quality of his work, Ed built his considerable reputation, beginning with his debut album “Night Birds” in 1987. It garnered a spot in the Boston Globe Critics Poll Top 10 Albums of the Year.” Shortly after the album’s release, Windham Hill Records included Ed on its Guitar Sampler (Vol.1). One of the highlights of the three hundred thousand unit selling Sampler, “The Handing Down” introduced the world to the beauty of Ed Gerhard’s music. “That one piece made me a lot of friends around the world,” Ed says.
Ed has released his ninth CD “There and Gone.” He was awarded a GRAMMY® for his inclusion on the CD “Henry Mancini; Pink Guitar.” Warner Brothers, MelBay and Hal Leonard have all released Ed Gerhard’s music in books. His guitar work can be heard on recordings by Arlo Guthrie, Jorma Kaukonen, Bill Morrissey and in the Ken Burns films “Mark Twain” and “ The National Parks: America’s Best Idea.”
Along with players like Ben Harper and David Lindley, Gerhard’s unique approach to the Weissenborn (an acoustic Hawaiian lap slide guitar) is playing a significant role in reinvigorating interest in this somewhat esoteric but beautiful instrument. Ed’s style of Weissenborn playing is unique in that he composes and arranges music for solo Weissenborn with beautiful melodies, complex chords and moving basslines, unusual for an instrument that normally serves an accompaniment role. Ed is featured in the book “Lap Steel Guitar” alongside legendary players like Greg Leisz, David Lindley, Jerry Byrd and more.
In a true collaboration of guitarist and guitar maker, Breedlove Guitars released the “Ed Gerhard Signature Model” guitar. The guitar became one of Breedlove’s best selling guitars and won the “Player’s Choice Award” by Acoustic Guitar Magazine. Breedlove has released a Gerhard Weissenborn copy in collaboration with Gerhard. Here they have combined traditional design with innovative features and contemporary wood combinations.

NAMM Museum Performance: Tori Roze & Johnny Alexander
"This is Soul for today: tight, sophisticated, and up-to-date...a winner" (San Diego Troubadour). Tori Roze and Johnny Alexander are two members of a larger six piece original funky soul-jazz band called Tori Roze and The Hot Mess from San Diego, CA. The band, of which Alexander and Roze are the primary songwriters, has been nominated for three San Diego Music Awards including "Best Acoustic," "Best Blues Album," and "Best Pop Album."
Tori funnels her musical influence down from childhood favorites Michael Jackson, Erykah Badu, Ella Fitzgerald, Bjork and musical theatre bringing forth a uniquely syncopated, clever, interesting, and unmatched blending of audio tapestries. Alexander, a diverse man of music ranging from The Smiths to jazz and classic rock, is a sound magician inverting standard chord structures and time signatures into beautiful landscapes; his contributions are full of brilliant luminescence.
Currently recording their third album due out in Spring 2018, Tori Roze and The Hot Mess are a soulful force to be reckoned with. Gathering their musical thunder from an extremely eclectic time and space spanning centuries, this band busts straight through the glass ceiling of genre-bending: original funky soul-jazz exploding with grit, integrity, and vulnerability. Roze is a key artist in conveying the emotional intent behind a song. "Hearing Tori Roze's sultry voice for the first time is like learning that Santa Claus isn't real: it absolutely breaks your heart. Roze seduces you with her Erykah Badu-esque flair, and just when you think she can't be any smoother, she claws her way into your ears with her rocking roars" (San Diego City Beat).
“We pride ourselves on not fitting into the mainstream. The beauty is in the difference. We make genuine art. We shape sound. We care about what we do. We like to put some stank on it, bottom line," Roze says of their fearless musical style. Their unique edge of colorful heart-driven funky soul-jazz grooves enveloped in the emotionally potent lyrical truth that Roze serves up in spades; Tori Roze and The Hot Mess deliver serious human connection and an original sound that is absolutely unforgettable.

Product Information Exchange Summit
Product information exchange is a primary business process challenge in the music products industry. Presently there is not a single format that is widely used for product information.
The NAMM Standards Committee has developed two versions of the 'Item' document, neither of which has reached critical mass. Presently most product information is exchanged with Excel documents of various formats. Even using Excel, the fields used are not consistent with trading partners.
The goal of this meeting will be to create a standard Excel template that can be used for at least 80-90% of product information exchange. If we can agree on a common format it will simplify information exchange throughout the industry. What fields and data are absolutely necessary for you? Please join us to discuss and define this simple document that will help everybody.

NAMM Museum Performance: Aubrey Logan
The media refer to #1 selling artist, Aubrey Logan as “The Queen of Sass.” And it’s easy to see why. Her concerts are a mix of excellent musicality, jaw-dropping vocals, expert trombone-playing, a breathtaking array of originals and original takes on cover songs and, well…fun! Her heart wrenching musical stories has audiences in tears just before her comedic relief has them in stiches.
Aubrey Logan loves music, loves performing and loves her fans. And it shows. “My relationship with the audience is the most fun I can legally have!” she says. Very few artists can concentrate so fully on the music and yet be so connected to the people who have come to hear her. And that connection is magic.
Aubrey has seen a lot of recent success. Her debut album, Impossible, immediately shot to the top 10 on the iTunes, Billboard and Amazon charts. And her next appearance on Summer Horns II, from A to Z (as a special guest of Dave Koz on Concord Records) became the #1 selling Contemporary Jazz Album. Aubrey has spent more time at the top of the charts lately than she has in an airport, and travel has been a permanent fixture for her in the last couple of years.
Aubrey Logan has performed more than 250 shows since 2016. Besides countless dates touring as a guest star with Postmodern Jukebox and another nationwide tour with Dave Koz and his all-star lineup, Aubrey has been selling out her own shows in venues all over the US and Europe.
First coming to international attention after winning BOTH the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival Jury and Audience-Choice awards, Aubrey has gone on to perform with Pharrell Williams, Seth McFarlane, Meghan Trainor, Josh Groban, Gerald Albright, Haley Reinhart, and countless other legends. Her appearances on Jimmy Kimmel and The Grammy Awards and a PBS special and London Live have kept her in the public eye and millions of fans have watched her head-spinning videos on YouTube and Facebook. It seems like everywhere you turn, you’re bumping into Aubrey Logan.

NAMM Museum Performance: Ginger Cowgirl
While a taste for many styles of music is evident in Nashville-based band Ginger Cowgirl’s upcoming release, their approach is nevertheless rooted in the tradition of classic country brevity, wit and soul. Throw in some pedal steel, rockin' telecaster twang, worldly lyrics and front-woman Stacy Antonel’s eclectic vocals, and you have a unique brand of Americana music.
The core of Ginger Cowgirl is California-born Antonel, a vocalist whose range and versatility allow her to sing rock, jazz, soul, pop and country with equal proficiency and passion. She’s a classically trained pianist from the age of 7, holds a degree from UC Berkeley, and got her start in the music industry singing jingles while living in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 2013 she beat out hundreds of singers to win the $10,000 grand prize on Fox’s televised singing competition “3 Minutes to Stardom”.
Ginger Cowgirl is currently finishing up their debut EP at Historic RCA Studio C. After a Spring 2019 release the band will be touring extensively, both at home and abroad.

NAMM Museum Performance: Brittni Paiva
Brittni Paiva (pie –VAH) already a multi award-winning instrumentalist is known for her stunning articulation of what she can do on the ukulele going from slow and moving, to rapid-fire, classical-ballet, to ancient Japan, translating forms of jazz, world beat, pop, Flamenco and Latin, and filter these styles through her 4-string ukulele.
Brittni and her ukulele are a brilliant match: Both are humble in nature, small in size, and very powerful with proper delivery. Brittni and the `ukulele in general have gained notoriety, no longer confined by stereotypes about the instrument. There’s a global resurgence in the instrument’s popularity and she is part of the trend.
She has performed on stage with Carlos Santana when he appeared in Hawaii; also joined famed guitarist Tommy Emmanuel on stage at the California Worldfest; and become a 3-time Na Hoku Hanohano Award winner with numerous other nominations throughout the years, including Most Promising Artist of the Year in 2005 for her debut release, Brittni x 3.
Releasing her 5th CD with the legendary Grammy winner Tom Scott — who personally requested to play with her at a concert — thinks Paiva is the real deal, because of her ability to play all kinds of music without losing her identity. “She plays it like a guitar, giving her a wide range of possibilities. She adopts tunes to this instrument, and makes them sound full and rich. She’s doing a great job and has a great future…She’s got a really unique voice in music,” he raved.
Brittni received two nominations for this 5th CD and won both categories: Ukulele Album of the Year and Best Instrumental Composition of the Year from the Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts (Na Hoku Hanohano Awards).

NAMM Museum Performance: Doug Johns
Musician Doug Johns knows it’s all about the rhythm. After four solo recordings (Doug Johns, Pocket Fulla Nasty, Stank, and Blomp!), Doug is ready to invite listeners inside for his most autobiographical work to date, Vodka in the Woodpile.
Released on April 15, 2016, Vodka in the Woodpile reveals an unexpected new sound for the Cleveland bassist as he shares a sense of his life’s influences beyond the funk-bass standard. Doug kicks off the recording with a banjo in his hands on “Old Woman Creek,” salutes Rock and Roll in an energetic tribute to “Free Ride,” and still doesn’t miss a beat with his classic, full band funky sound in tracks like “Tricerafunk.”
Vodka in the Woodpile features performances with many of Doug Johns’ now-signature artists, including Jordan Simmons on Drums, Kenny Anderson and Joe Miller on Horns, and Oz Noy on Guitar. A special appearance from drummer icon Dennis Chambers and assistant production by Denali are Vodka highlights not to be missed.
Doug Johns has long been known for his deep groove and his open, sharing approach to music and life. Bass Player Magazine on Johns: “One of the most credit–deserving bass virtuosos in America…it’s his inventiveness that’s consistently compelling.”

Live vs. Live Streaming: Has Technology Become Center Stage?
Many music industry veterans remember the year when “file sharing” decimated the business of recorded music by offering an alternative to purchasing music. At the time, it seemed all but impossible to believe that consumer habits could change so drastically, that they would drive the industry into a 15-year recession and restructure. Fast forward to 2020, where a new technology has taken root—this time for live events and concerts during a pandemic. Is live streaming a temporary solution to bridge live music across the chasm of COVID-19, or will it permanently change consumer habits and reshape the future of live performance? Join A3E with special guest artist managers Martha Earls and Nikki Boon to discuss the future of live streaming and its impact on the road ahead for artists, concerts and live music venues.
