Blue Bear School of Music

Non-profit organization Blue Bear School of Music was founded as “Blue Bear Waltzes School of Genuine Music” in the summer of 1971 by a rock band called “Wolfgang & Strauss” – “Wolfgang” was a dog, and “Strauss,” two brothers in the band. Before moving to San Francisco to make their fame and fortune (and to found a music school), they lived in Northern California on the Bear River. When naming the school, the brothers Strauss whimsically recalled Johann Strauss’s “Blue Danube Waltz,” substituting the Bear River for the Danube, and the rest is history. For a period in the mid-’70s, when the founding members moved on, Blue Bear was run by a co-operative of teachers and students. In 1978 operations moved from the original storefront on Ocean Avenue to Fort Mason Center, where Blue Bear has thrived and evolved to its current state of more than 850 music-loving students per quarter. Blue Bear’s current Board of Trustees and Staff includes former “Wolfgang & Strauss” members Steve Savage (Board President) and Richard Strauss along with Electric Orchestra & Folk Chorus (and Blue Bear Association) member Bonnie Hayes. Day-to-day operations are under the direction of Dennis Criteser, a former student who has been associated with the school for 35+ years.

Chicas Rockeras promotes healing, growth, and confidence for girls through music education while building self-esteem and encouraging group collaboration.

We are a collective of mujeres, educators, musicians, community members, and straight up music lovers! The time is now for South East Los Angeles, it doesn’t matter if you like punk, rock n roll, banda, pop, rancheras, metal, hip hop or oldies lets create some music!

We want to create a safe transformative space where girls can discover themselves though music. We wish we had this kind of camp when we were younger. Often, we didn’t’ have the resources, privilege or support to explore our curiosity. Eventually we met that one family member, that one teacher, that one mentor, that one person that kept that spark alive. Now it’s our turn to be that cool tia, to share and encourage your voice through music.

The first Girls Rock Camp was the genius idea of Misty McElroy. It was her thesis project in her senior year at Portland State University. She was a roadie and frustrated by the blatant sexism she experienced in the music world. The premise was simple: to take a shot at empowering girls through music. Now, 17 years later, there are 35 camps in the U.S., Europe and South America.

Guitar Mash was founded with the mission to connect people to their own creative capacity and to the other humans around them through communal music-making.

In 2012, producer Rebecca Weller was introduced to Paul Simon’s longtime guitarist Mark Stewart after he had led a parade of trombones down a street in the East Village. Weller and Stewart shared a passion for the participatory–and the recognition of the portable, democratic guitar as the quickest catalyst for sharing stories and songs –which resulted in him leading the first Guitar Mash “campfire jam” in a NYC living room.

Since then, through large-scale jams and workshops, Guitar Mash has brought together thousands of players and music lovers–of all ages, backgrounds, socio-economic levels and musical abilities –to sing, play, share and create. We work closely with community-based organizations to provide underserved teens opportunities for communal playing and songwriting.

This day of live music performances is open to musicians of all ages, races, abilities, and genres. It is a day for unity in musical celebration and community outreach. The day's grand finale is a huge group performance of "Okie from Muskogee" and "Oklahoma." MMM will also be hosting other "Make Music" events throughout the year.

The charity will use The NAMM Foundation grant to align its Learn to Play Day in 2017 with the global Make Music Day UK music events and to expand the reach and ambition of the project. The Learn to Play Day annual event enables the public to have free lessons at UK music retail stores. Rio Hondo Symphony Association

The Rio Hondo Symphony performs four admission free classical music concerts each season at the Vic Lopez Auditorium at Whittier High School, Whittier Ave. in Whittier California. The concerts start at 3 PM, have one intermission, and are completed before 5 PM. Two concerts are held in the fall, and two in the spring.

Each concert is preceded by a Concert Preview sponsored by the Rio Hondo Symphony Guild and is held at 10 AM on the Friday before concert. In addition, each concert is followed by a reception hosted by the cities of Whittier and Santa Fe Springs, the Symphony Association, and the Rio Hondo Symphony Guild in a separate location for each reception. Members at the Soloist level ($150) and higher will receive an invitation to the reception in the mail.

Various special events related to the Rio Hondo Symphony are held each year.

The Music-Heals Project (MHP) is raising awareness of the healing power of music. Our mission is two-fold. First, we are working to research, invent, create, and compose music that effectively heals people. One example is our current work on autism in partnership with Vanderbilt University in Nashville. We are researching and composing specific rhythms, tempos and key signatures that will resynchronize the out-of-sync brainwaves of children with autism! Additional examples are pinpointing the music or rhythm that will help improve a Parkinson’s patient’s ability to walk, and researching the type of music necessary to assist an Alzheimer’s patient with memory and recall. Ultimately, this music will be used as a medical therapy for these patients. Instead of taking a pill three times a day for an illness, our belief is that listening to a tailored musical therapy three times per day might be equally effective.

The VH1 Save the Music Foundation develops long-term, sustainable instrumental music programs in high-need public schools.   In 2014, they created the KEYS + Kids Piano Grant Program to respond to the demand for high-quality piano packages for music, drama and community programs in K-12 schools.  The NAMM Foundation funding will provide two targeted KEYS + Kids grants to qualifying schools in the 2017-18 school year.
