The NAMM Idea Center at 2014 Summer NAMM got off to a fast pace with “How I Got 5 Million Views and 15,000 Subscribers on My YouTube Channel.” Here, Nick Failla walks you through why you need to get your videos online, how to promote your videos, where to find them and how to make them, ideal video length, how to distribute them, and how to create a YouTube channel.

Why use YouTube? YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world—after Google. “If you’re not online and can’t be found online, in the eyes of the consumer, you don’t exist,” Failla said.

He added that it’s never been easier to build your brand and drive business to your store with an online vehicle like YouTube. Moreover, he told the audience, “You’re all video producers! You can literally produce an HD-quality video off your devices—iPhones, Androids or iPads/tablets.”

When it comes to self-produced videos, Failla’s advice is to be yourself, and keep it simple and real. Don’t worry about producing the perfect video because your customers will connect, first and foremost, with who you are, what you’re telling them and why. His rule: “The most important brand you sell is yourself.” YouTube videos are the ideal way to let your customers be part of a bigger experience and community, and be drawn to your store.

Failla recommended creating and using all types of videos, such as customer testimonials, in-store and manufacturer instrument demos, motivational videos with you or your staff, and teacher introductions. This will help parents and customers find out who your teachers are, what they do, how they teach and what styles of music they teach.

Finally, you have to use multiple avenues to build your following: YouTube, Facebook, Google, your website and email. Every time you upload a demo or instructional video, email it to your customer base. Each market is different—and it may take some time for your videos to catch on—but once you establish your online presence, it will take on a life of its own. Whether you’re just getting started or taking it to another level, YouTube is a necessity to help grow your business.
