James Johnson

James Johnson was first and foremost a band director -- a well respected one at that! He opened Mississippi Music while still teaching and soon became involved with a long list of industry organizations. He added his insight and knowledge as President of NAMM, President of AMC, and as an honored member of the American Bandmasters Association. Jimmy was also a founding member of the Omega group, which has played a vital role in the progression of the industry beginning in the 1960s. Along with his wife Mac, Jimmy was a pillar in the music retail industry and an example of fortitude, business savvy, and passion. Jimmy’s NAMM Oral History interview was completed on May 5, 2003. A second interview was completed in June 2007 with Jimmy and his loving wife Mac who played a vital role in the early success of the store and who “held down the fort” when Jimmy traveled for his many industry responsibilities.
